It has been some time since i updated this blog. I guess i'm losing interest writing or just lazy to think of materials to write. Anyway, i want to share a book which i've just read. Since The Da Vinci Code, the word 'conspiracy' have often popped up at me n me frens yamcha sessions and conversations so i guess maybe some of my friends might find this book interesting.

New York Times bestseller, Confessions of an Economic Hit Man by John Perkins is a true story about himself as an Economic Hit Man (EHM). An EHM, based on the definition from the book are people hired by international financial institutions such as the World Bank, IMF or huge corporations to encourage countries (mostly third world) to take out huge American loans with the promise of economic and social development to the country. They acheive this through fraudulent financial reports, statistics and in the author's case, misleading forecasts which causes victim countries to take out larger than need loans for their own country's development which in turn are contracted to US companies and corporations.
The result is the economic boom doesn't come true as predicted (due to the 'over-optimistic' forecasts) and the country is burdened with huge loans (for eg, the book says Ecuador spends 50% of its national budget just to service the loans!). Then these companies or countries (in this case the US) use this as leverage to pressurize countries to do their economic and political bidding.
The book gives a brief insight on the mechanism that his home country employs to promote the expansion of the 'Global Empire' and to safeguard US oil supplies. The author goes on to share his experiences in countries such as Indonesia, Latin American countries and of course, Saudio Arabia.
Of course as a reader (and an objective one, i hope), i don't try to assume everything in the book are true. However, his discussions on recent and not-so-recent international events (for eg presidential assasinations) and international politics make me think about the world today and triggered my sudden interest in global politics.
What if what he wrote is true or even half of it is true? The rest of the world currently seem helpless in stopping this new form of imperialism. This is especially evident when you look at how even the United Nations was helpless in stopping the US from invading Iraq and yet whenever a country goes against the will of UN, often the US is the first one to spearhead its noble cause. Btw, have they managed to find any WMDs? The only result of the invasion is that we know the country with the WMDs is the US itself.
